For it is (A)for your sake that I have borne reproach,
    that dishonor has covered my face.
I have become (B)a stranger to my brothers,
    an alien to my mother's sons.

For (C)zeal for your house has consumed me,
    and (D)the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept and humbled[a] my soul with fasting,
    it became my reproach.
11 When I made (E)sackcloth my clothing,
    I became (F)a byword to them.
12 I am the talk of those who (G)sit in the gate,
    and the drunkards make (H)songs about me.

13 But as for me, my (I)prayer is to you, O Lord.
    At (J)an acceptable time, O God,
    in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14 Deliver me
    from sinking in (K)the mire;
(L)let me be delivered from my enemies
    and from (M)the deep waters.
15 Let not the flood sweep over me,
    or the deep swallow me up,
    or (N)the pit close (O)its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for your (P)steadfast love is good;
    according to your abundant (Q)mercy, (R)turn to me.
17 (S)Hide not your face from your servant,
    (T)for I am in distress; (U)make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
    ransom me because of my enemies!

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (A)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can (B)we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us (C)who have been baptized (D)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were (E)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as (F)Christ was raised from the dead by (G)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in (H)newness of life.

For (I)if we have been united with him in (J)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that (K)our old self[a] (L)was crucified with him in order that (M)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For (N)one who has died (O)has been set free[b] from sin.
